INSPIRING NEW BLOOD

We work in a creative industry and we love it. So when we were asked to visit a secondary school in Nottingham to tell their Year 9 students how brilliant a career in design is, we jumped at the chance.

The Fernwood School Design Day has become a significant date in the calendar for a handful of creative businesses in the East Midlands. And now we’re delighted to be one of them. We joined a wide array of companies and creatives that included Sat Bains, and Dizzy Ink, who shared their knowledge and passion for the industry at the Fernwood School Design Day 2024.

TWO BRIEFS

We set two design briefs that were based on previous live projects for our class of 22. One was a Graphic Design brief for Community Football Sports Zone and one was an Interior Architecture brief for a global engineering firm. We hoped that these two briefs would appeal to students and give them an opportunity to see what we do. We brought in lots of wonderful products to show the class including lightboxes, acoustics, acrylics and wallcovering solutions to get their creative minds whirring. We were relaxed about how they developed their ideas because their skill sets are so varied. Some children drew their design with pens and pencils, others used Adobe software, while some chose to design full 3D CAD renders! At the end of the day we had a short presentation session where everyone explained their design and show their work.

CREATIVE CONCEPTS

We were overwhelmed with some of the creative ideas for the School Design Day. From built-in swings, cherry-wood hexagons, illuminated wall panelling and a sea-weed inspired room divider! We had designed five small awards to hand out at the end of the day and hadn’t imagined it would be so difficult to choose!
