Gospel Oak is an expanding new academy in the Black Country. We were invited to transform their long, white corridor walls into an engaging space for students to enjoy with our wall graphics for schools. With over 1,200 students from 11 to 19 years old, our design team created a style that appealed to both first years – fresh from primary school – and young adults in their sixth form. The deep grey carpet and low ceilings made the space feel dark in places, while the large windows further along the corridor offered plenty of light. This juxtapose was the springboard of our interior graphics colour palette, a slightly muted selection of bright tertiaries teamed with a soft cream and grey to deliver the contrast.

A CONSISTENT STYLE

We have developed a consistent style for the internal graphics that has already seen a Phase two rolled out across additional wall spaces. This treatment includes an easy-to read, uppercase typeface for headlines and softer font for body copy that used within a series of shapes. All our imagery follows the style and colour palette we introduced to create synergy throughout the school.

CONTENT

The wall graphics for this school were designed in partnership with both the Student Body and teaching staff. We actively encourage this type of steer from students so we held a series of meetings with them to ascertain what kind of subjects they’d like to cover. These sessions were incredibly helpful and allowed our design team to really understand what information the school wanted to be communicated on their walls.

Our wall graphics are completely bespoke and designed specifically for each school, printed in-house and installed by our own team. We have access to over 11 million stock images and often use these in our graphics. But our design team loved getting their teeth into some of the topics raised by the Gospel Oak students such as the history of LGBT, mental health awareness and the environment. We have always believed that wall graphics for schools can be so much more than just an image. We can communicate and teach – even on a subconscious level – in spaces that students spend six or more hours a day over five or more years. So we loved hearing their big ideas and turning them into fabulous wall graphics.

EDUCATIONAL

As well as covering important current affairs we also like to promote parts of the curriculum. Did you know that 65% of the population are ‘visual learners’? Therefore when teachers lecture, they could be reaching less that half the class. So we think wall graphics are an excellent opportunity to communicate some of the more visual information that is more difficult to digest. This way, wall graphics can even become part of the lesson.
