Coombe Girls School in Surrey has been a client of ours for several years. Our creative journey to transform their school walls began with printed outdoor graphics and a custom designed reception One Wall. And now, we have just completed a large-scale Phase 2 which includes a range of education wall graphics, departmental signage and a suite of wayfinding panels. When we began the original project, the School had recently had a rebrand. A new logo, company typeface and a handful of brand colours acted as a springboard for our creative design team to work their magic.
We are proud to design unique school graphics for each school, because every school is different. Coombe Girls’ School is certainly no exception. We have developed a modern, versatile design style that can be used across multiple applications around the school that adds consistency and student engagement. Each wall graphic and educational print promotes the school values and brand. And we believe a strong brand adds value and creates unity.
Green is the School’s primary colour, with an additional palette for the faculties across the school. We developed a suite of signage to herald the entrance to each department around the site. This was typically a specialist wall vinyl that wrapped around the corners of the vast stairwells. This type of application created interest and added a dynamic feel to the spaces.
In long corridors wall space was at a premium, so we used unwanted windows to communicate messages and educational information. Staff said that the glazing caused distraction for students in the classrooms and wasn’t required as a light source, so we used a specialist vinyl to transform the glazing into extra wall space.
The human eye can register 36,000 visual messages every hour – and compared to text, visuals are processed 60,000x faster. We believe that imagery and graphics teamed with curriculum-based information have a valuable part to play within the learning environment. Our design team developed a concept based on pioneering women throughout history. We selected these elite ladies for their accomplishments within each department. Frida Kahlo and Tracey Emin were amongst the women in the art and design corridor, whilst Katherine Johnson and Mae Jemison and their peers promoted women in science. These bite-size information boards, delivered with a striking graphic will be available for all students to see, absorb and digest for years to come.
Coombe Girls’ School is proud to have a handful of famous students to have graced their corridors. A well-known alumni is a great opportunity for an inspirational quote that creates pride in the school and encouragement to succeed. Dame Jacqueline Wilson was one such former student at Coombe we thought it was a fabulous idea to use her quote “There’s nothing wrong with being a dreamer. Dreams can come true if you work hard enough”.
Our in-house fitters completed the graphic installation over the summer holidays to avoid disruption to staff and students. All window vinyls, indoor and outdoor signage and graphic panels were fitted over four days by just two operatives. Our project management team coordinated all Method and Risk Assessments for a smooth, safe and snag-free installation.
