Our lovely friends at UHCW (University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire) Charity asked us to work our magic on another area within the Trust. The Children’s Oncology waiting area needed a lift to entertain anxious children and tiny toddlers, so some engaging hospital wall graphics were designed to create a welcome distraction.
The main waiting area was transformed into an underwater aquarium with a selection of sea animals Photoshopped into the scene to add as much detail as possible. Whales, turtles, clown fish, rays and jellyfish all made an appearance within the hospital wall graphics for children to find and count.
The design was carefully crafted to account for new seating furniture and existing sockets and fittings. We printed to high-adhesive wall vinyl with a specialist antimicrobial laminate to offer maximum protection and durability for these hospital wall graphics that would be regularly cleaned and scrubbed.
The rooms in this consulting area see a lot of poorly children, many from the oncology unit who need regular blood tests. We talked to the consultants and nurses who explained that they would like some hospital wall graphics that would distract children while they took blood samples. The staff were keen for a large ‘where’s wally’ type design that would be suitable for both pre-school children and early teens. So our in-house illustrator found and developed a style that was suitable and drew two full underwater scenes that would capture the imagination of the young patients. The hand-drawn illustration was then digitised and coloured within the Adobe Creative Suite to create the final design. Each wall took approximately 10 hours to draw and colour, before being artworked ready for print.
Our professional installation team visited the site over a weekend to minimise disruption to the ward. Three operatives fitted the hospital wall graphics in just one day, leaving the ward ready to surprise their first appointment on Monday morning!
