Banbury Museum is a family-friendly museum situated next to an idyllic canal side and opposite a historic boatyard in the Oxfordshire town of Banbury. The Civil War, plush manufacturing, the Victorian market town, costume from the 17th Century to the present day and the Oxford Canal are just some of the stories displayed in the museum’s galleries. So we were naturally delighted when the opportunity arose to work on their latest museum graphics as part of a larger refurbishment project.
We knew this project would be great when Oxford Architects contacted us in the early stages of their planning. We worked closely with their designers to give them a better understanding of the substrates in order to make best use of the materials. Together with our studio, they designed according to roll widths and sheet sizes to maximise material. Considering production techniques in this way makes a project more cost effective and minimises wastage.
The project’s scope was wide with multiple printing techniques and production methods. Part of the building was brand new, whilst other areas were original walls with uneven faces, so even through vinyl was suitable for smooth, newly painted walls, we suggested direct print to dibond for more challenging spaces. Signage was an eclectic mix of specialist powder-coated MDF, cad-cut text and logos, acrylic and push-through wayfinding with a beautiful tactile quality.
Our innovative Fabriframe system was also used in many areas to offer the museum graphics the flexibility to update the graphics for future events, programmes and exhibitions. One piece wallpapers; OneWall, and super wide vinyls were used to offer more longevity to traditional cut vinyl wall graphics. All prints were printed at an impressive 1000dpi to give the highest possible quality for the museum environment.
This incredible project has created and versatile platform for the Museum to grow and develop towards further redevelopments planned for 2019 and beyond.
